Why Martial Arts Helps Kids Succeed in School (From a Mom and a Coach)

by Jennifer Cooper-Coach, mom and grandma

As a mom of six, a grandmother of three and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coach who has trained for the past eight years, I have seen firsthand how martial arts can truly change a child's life.

When parents ask me if Jiu Jitsu is good for kids  my answer is always a big yes--not just for self-defense, but because if helps them in school, at home and in life.

Here's what I have noticed over the years with my own kids and the students I have coached:

1. Focus Improves in Class and at Home

Kids today are pulled in a million directions. Jiu Jitsu gives them the tools to slow down, pay attention, and really focus. I've watched children who struggled to sit still learn how to channel that energy into listening and following directions. Those same skills carry into the classroom and even into homework time.

2. Confidence Makes a Huge Difference

Every child lights up the first time they learn a technique and realize, i can do this!" That confidence isn't just for the mats. It show up when they raise their hand in class, take a test, or give a presentation. It's amazing how learning to push through challenges in Jiu Jitsu gives the the courage to face challenges at school.

3. Less Screen Time, More Real-Life Fun

Like most parents, I know the battle of screen time. What I love about Jiu Jitsu is that is gives kids something exciting to do that doesn't involve a phone of a tablet. They get to move, laugh, wrestle and connect with other kids in a healthy and positive way.

4. Problem-Solving Becomes Second Nature

Rolling in Jiu Jitsu is like solving a puzzle. Kids learn to think ahead, adjust quickly and not give up when something doesn't work the first itme. Those problem-solving skills are the same ones they us in math, reading and everyday life.

5. Healthy Habits for a Lifetime

The value of Jiu Jitsu-discipline, respect, perseverance--stick to kids. As both a mom and coach, I love knowing that these lessons will stay with them long after they leave the mtas.
